Review: Enjoy the Official RoboCop Game for Free on iOS and AndroidJanuary 19, 2014
With the reboot of 1987’s science fiction classic, RoboCop set to arrive in theaters next month it’s not surprising that one of the first official tie-ins to hit the street is a mobile game featuring the likeness of the cybernetic lawman. Approached with managed expectations, the RoboCop game from Glu Mobile ends up being an enjoyable iOS and Android experience that’s made even sweeter given that there’s no cost to download and play it.
The action in RoboCop unfolds from a zoomed-out third-person perspective with players tapping the screen to target and eliminate attacking enemies. Other than lateral movement from one destructible cover point to the next, the titular crime fighter’s forward movement is dictated almost entirely by the game as successive waves of criminals are neutralized. The end result is essentially an on-rails shooting gallery, but it’s a fun diversion that’s ultimately better suited to mobile than a quasi twin stick shooter would be.
The game offers a handful of modes to try and a respectable variety of upgrades for RoboCop’s weapons and armor with even more available through optional in-app purchases. As with other games like Candy Crush, and Jelly Splash, RoboCop limits the amount of free playtime daily. Given that the experience seems optimized for short, action-packed bursts, the time constraint is mostly a non-issue.
Graphically, RoboCop is one of the more impressive mobile games available with imagery and animation that compares favorably to what’s on offer for dedicated portable gaming consoles like Nintendo’s 3DS or Sony’s PlayStation Vita.
For shooter fans with even the slightest interest in the upcoming RoboCop movie, Glu Mobile’s game offers a compelling preview of what to expect. With a “AAA” presentation and gameplay that’s fun and free to jump into, it’s hard to not recommend. You can Grab Glu Mobile’s official RoboCop game now for iOS and Android devices.
