The reboot of the venerable Tomb Raider franchise launched on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC nearly a year ago accompanied by mostly favorable reviews. Now, courtesy of Crystal Dynamics and Square-Enix, the adventure continues in the aptly titled, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition which was recently released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Having thoroughly put Lara Croft through her paces on both next-generation machines (as well as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) weve compiled four reasons why we think the “Definitive” version of Tomb Raider is worth playing.
Its Gorgeous. Whether played on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, this latest version of Tomb Raider truly offers the definitive graphical experience for fans of the franchise. Upcoming games like Infamous: Second Son and Quantum Break are likely to surpass what Crystal Dynamics has achieved here in short order, but for now the game represents a significant improvement over prior console versions. In-depth frame rate and resolution breakdowns aside, the environments, effects, and animation are suitably lush on both next-generation machines.
The Gameplay is Varied and Fun. Similar games have attempted to combine quick-time-events, exploration, puzzle-solving, and shooting elements with mixed results. Like its current generation predecessor, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition offers the perfect mélange of all of those core gameplay elements in a package thats consistently challenging while remaining generally fun throughout. The comparisons to Naughty Dogs Uncharted series (which were fans of) are valid, but Lara Crofts latest adventure is a far more open and organic experience.
Engaging Customization & Crafting. Weapon and skill upgrades certainly arent new, but looting every tomb you discover and pilfering every slain bad guy yield exciting gameplay options in Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition. Whether unlocking advanced melee techniques or equipping explosive arrows theres always a drive to tinker with your gear and abilities. Admittedly, I spent way too much time switching between the assortment of selectable outfits that Lara Croft can doff and don.
Play While You Wait. By hitting store shelves during the lull between the launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and debut of their respective killer apps (Infamous: Second Son and Titanfall), the release of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition couldnt be better timed. It the perfect game to bridge the software gap while portending the technical step forward of the powerful new machines.
Bottom-line: Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is an example of a high profile, long-anticipated reboot that has largely met or exceeded the hype surrounding it. Adventure-seeking next-gen early adopters shouldnt miss out on Lara Crofts latest explorative thrill-filled adventure. Grab it now for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
